Taking the Train

The other day, I was riding home after work on the commuter train. A young woman sat down oppsite me in the crowded compartment. Everyone on that train was either talking, drowsing or listening to their mp-3 players. I looked at her and thought that there was something different about her, but it took me a few moments to realize it: she was reading her book, totally unperturbed by the noise and commotion around her – and she wasn’t wearing headphones.

How strange, I thought, someone who doesn’t need an i-pod to shut out the rest of the world and can simply concentrate on the story she is reading.

Unfortunately, I didn’t see what book it was that managed to captivate her so.
